Chapter Sixteen

Donovan raced down the stairs, eager to finally see Miles and Wyatt after so much time had passed. He joined Preston and several footmen in front of the house and saw three carriages making their way up the drive. Morris had tutored him enough for him to know that the ton always brought more than one carriage. One vehicle would convey his friends, while the others would include servants who would tend to their needs and their various trunks of clothing. He wondered if one had even been reserved for the baby and his nursery governess.

The first carriage pulled up and the others followed suit. Donovan’s footmen sprang into action under Preston’s watchful eye. He looked to the first vehicle, though, and moments later, Wyatt appeared, waving jovially at him. He came down the stairs and held out a hand. A woman with an hourglass figure appeared, her glossy, brown hair shining in the sun. Wyatt escorted her to him.

The two men hugged one another, Wyatt slapping him on the back.

“It is ever so good to see you, Donovan. And to introduce you to my duchess.”

Donovan took her hand and kissed it.

“I am happy to make your acquaintance, Your Grace,” she said.

“None of that,” he proclaimed. “Wyatt and I are like brothers. I am Donovan to you.”

She smiled. “Then I am Meadow. Thank you for inviting us to spend Christmas with you.”

He burst out laughing. “I am afraid it is the other way around. Your husband invited himself—and the others.”

She turned to Wyatt and gave him a brilliant smile. “Why doesn’t that surprise me?”

Electricity seemed to crackle between them and Donovan took a step back. “I must greet the others,” he said and hurried over to where Miles stood outside the carriage.

His friend reached up and took a bundle, which had to be the baby. Casually, he cradled the infant in one arm and helped his wife down from the carriage with the other. Turning, he beamed.

“Donovan!”

He went to Miles and threw an arm gently about him, not wanting to crush the baby.

“It is so good to see you, Miles. It has been a while.”

“This is Emery, my better half.”

He took the hand of the tall, beautiful woman, her brown eyes rimmed with amber, and kissed it. “It is good to finally meet you in person. Miles’ letters speak of nothing but you.”

“Not anymore,” her husband protested. “Future missives will be about nothing but Ben.” He smiled down at his sleeping son. “Ben is the light of our lives now.” Miles cooed at the baby and then looked at his wife.

Once again, Donovan saw something powerful between the pair. It was obvious both his friends had the good fortune of making a love match.

Clearing his throat, he said to the duchess, “We are going to be on a first-name basis this holiday. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Not at all,” Emery said. “I prefer it. I have been lucky to get to know Wyatt since his return from war. I look forward to knowing more about you, as well, Donovan.
